X School is a learner-led, purpose-driven learning community—not a conventional school. Our model is built around emotional intelligence, real-world experiences, and meaningful connection. We focus on developing the human skills your child needs to thrive: creativity, collaboration, confidence, and adaptability.
We don’t use traditional grade levels or teaching methods. Instead, children move through multi-age Pods (Spark, Threshold, Discovery, Launchpad) based on developmental readiness. We replace tests and grades with mastery tracking, projects, and personal growth.
We are a community that facilitates programs that support our goals and beliefs, like Acton Academy Calgary West & Montgomery Preschool.
The Acton Academy West program facilitated within X School meets provincial learning outcomes. Learners progress through a mastery-based system that ensures academic alignment while allowing space for exploration, independence, and deeper learning.
X School itself functions as the broader learning community that supports this model—and extends it through enrichment, partnerships, and flexible learning options.
At X School, the learning journey is powered by a combination of adaptive online platforms, hands-on pen-and-paper work, and real-time support from Guides. Learning is intentionally gamified to increase engagement, spark curiosity, and build motivation. These platforms also provide powerful diagnostics, giving both learners and Guides clear insight into areas of growth and opportunities for improvement.
A common question we hear from parents is: “How do we know where our child is on their academic growth in relation to the Alberta curriculum?” To support this, we use a robust tool called IXL, which is directly aligned with the Alberta Program of Studies. Each week, learners engage with IXL to track their progress and measure mastery of grade-level outcomes. This gives us — and families — a transparent picture of where each learner stands academically.
Armed with this insight, our Guides can fine-tune each learner’s personalized path, set meaningful performance goals, and celebrate milestones along the way. Most importantly, learners themselves become active participants in this process: they can see their progress, set their own targets, and build confidence and agency in their education.
Our model offers a 5-day Core Program (included in tuition), with the option to add enrichment days to personalize your child’s schedule:
Core Learning (5 Days/Week): Academic progress, Socratic dialogue, self-directed learning, quests, emotional coaching, and daily movement
Optional Add-On Days (Additional Fee):

STEAM-ED Innovation – Thursdays
Community X-Cursions throughout the year
The Spark Pod (Kindergarten) runs 5 full days/week on location by design.
